CAT Percentile 2021: As IIM is one of the top MBA colleges in India, the admission criteria and selection procedure are different from others. Although, the primary eligibility criteria is a minimum of 50% aggregate marks in any discipline at the graduate level. However, this is not enough, what makes it different is the high CAT cut off percentile for selection to the Written Ability Test (WAT), Group Discussion (GD) and Personal Interview (PI) round. Therefore, the authorities calculate the CAT percentile to shortlist candidates for admission to IIMs. After the entrance exam, candidates want to know how to calculate the CAT percentile.
As CAT is conducted in different sessions in a single day, the scores of candidates are normalised. The scaled scores are converted to percentile for the shortlisting process. Many students are not aware of how to calculate CAT percentile? Therefore, they must know the steps that are involved in the final calculation of the CAT 2021 percentile. Know the procedure for how to calculate the CAT percentile here.
How to Calculate CAT Percentile
CAT percentile is a relative score that shows the rank as opposed to the rest of the CAT test takers. In simple words, the CAT percentile is a measure of classifying a candidate on the basis of other candidates scoring below them. To calculate the CAT percentile, the scores are normalized. The parameters CAT scores normalization is done are location, sessions, and the difficulty level of different exam papers. All these criteria are equalized while scaling the raw score secured by the candidates. Considering all these criteria, a normalized score is obtained which is used to calculate CAT percentile. The scaled scores for each of the three sections and the total scores along with the percentile is released on the scorecard. Also, candidates can use the CAT percentile calculator to calculate their scores.
Calculation of CAT Percentile
A CAT percentile decides the rank of the candidate seeking MBA/PGDM admission in top IIMs and other B-Schools in India. The formula to calculate sectional as well as the overall CAT percentile of each candidate is the same, which is mentioned below –
Formula to Calculate CAT Percentile – P = (R/N) × 100
P= percentile score
R= Rank of the candidate assigned on the basis of scaled CAT score or the total number of candidates who rank below the respective candidate.
N= Number of candidates who appeared in CAT 2021 (both morning and evening sessions)
The steps to calculate CAT 2021 percentile for a sectional as well as an overall paper are provided below –
- Step 1: Calculate the total number of candidates (N) who appeared for CAT (ie including both morning and afternoon sessions).
- Step 2: Assign a rank (r), based on the scaled scores obtained in the QA section, to all candidates who appeared for CAT. In the case of two or more candidates obtaining identical scaled scores in the QA section, designate identical ranks to all those candidates.
- Step 3: Calculate the percentile score (P) of a candidate with rank (r) in the QA section following the formula – P = (R/N) × 100.
- Step 4 – Round off the calculated CAT 2021 percentile score up to two decimal points. A similar strategy is followed for calculating the CAT percentile score for the other two sections, ie DILR and VARC in CAT.
